Day Surgery Unit Guide

We look forward to welcoming you to our Day Surgery Unit.

Our purpose-built Day Surgery Unit is equipped to safely and efficiently perform a wide range of surgeries, procedures and diagnostics.

Day surgery minimises the need for overnight hospital stays and enables you to return home the same day, to continue recovery in your own home.

The Day Surgery Unit patient journey...

  • Arrive at the hospital and proceed to Admissions on the right side of reception, on the ground floor. Here you will complete the admission process and complete any outstanding payment.

We recommend that you leave all valuables (such as money, jewellery, mobile phone and credits cards) at home on the day. However, if you need to bring these items with you, admission staff will provide you with a form that you will need to complete.

The hospital does not accept responsibility for any valuables left with us.
  • You will then be directed to the Day Surgery Unit reception, on the ground floor next to the cafe. From there, in the Pre-Op room, the Admissions nurse will complete your health assessment, place a wristband on you and get you changed, ready for your procedure.

You will change into a theatre gown. For women, please remove your bra, you may be provided with disposal underpants depending on the procedure. You will don a theatre hat to cover your hair and theatre shoes to cover your feet. Please remove any hair ties, clips and jewellery.
Personal items (valuables)
  • Endoscopy patients, personal items will be transferred with you and kept under your bed in a basket, with your clothing.
  • All other patients, you can choose to have your personal items locked away in a safe or kept in a basket, together with your clothes. These items will be returned to you during recovery.
Please be aware that the nursing staff and hospital will not be held responsible for your belongings.
  • Next you will go to the Anaesthetic Bay. This is where you will wait for your procedure.
(If accompanying a minor, one parent only will be permitted to go into the bay with the patient.)

Waiting time

On occasion, due to unforeseen circumstances you may have a longer than expected wait time for your procedure. We will aim to provide you with regular updates on the progress of the theatre list.

We do our best to minimise your waiting time, but a delay can result from clinical decisions made by the surgeons.

A warm blanket will be available if needed. Please don’t hesitate to ask one of our nurses.
  • When it is your turn, the anaesthetic nurse will walk with you into theatre. You will be able to ask any questions relating to your anaesthetic care.
  • After your procedure, once you leave the theatre, you will be taken to the Recovery Unit.
  • Once you are awake, the staff will assist you to get dressed into your own clothes and you will be escorted to the second recovery stage where you will get dressed and recuperate in a recliner chair. You will be served sandwiches, snacks and drinks. Please notify our team if you have any dietary requirements/ allergies.

All valuables will be returned to you.

For safety and confidentiality family members are not allowed in Recovery (except when escorting a minor).
  • During your recovery, a nurse will provide you with Post Operation Instructions in writing. These will include wound care, pain and medication management, follow up appointments, emergency and after hour phone numbers to use.
  • Approximately one hour before being discharged the nursing staff will call the person who is responsible for picking you up or may ask you to contact the person, and provide them with an estimated discharge time. The discharge time will depend on what post surgery requirements there are, like waiting to see your doctor and how well your recovery is progressing.

The responsible person will be directed to pick you up from Day Surgery Reception on the ground floor or Level 4 Reception.
  • The person responsible for collecting you will need to come into the hospital in person, to sign you out. You will need a responsible person to stay with you at home for the first 24 hours, for your safety and care. If this is not arranged beforehand, the procedure will have to be postponed.
  • Rest and recovery in your own home, but know we are available to be contacted anytime if you have concerns or questions. Please note we do not have an emergency department.
