Information for patients WITH Private Health Fund Insurance

What does my policy cover?

Health fund insurance policies have different levels of cover. These are Gold, Silver, Bronze or Basic. It is important that you are aware of what your policy covers you for.

Once your specialist has advised that you need a procedure, please confirm the following with your health fund well in advance of your admission:
  • Does my policy cover me for the procedure/s I will be having?
You will need to provide your health fund with the procedure item numbers to check if your policy will cover the costs. These will have been provided to you by your specialist. It is essential to provide the correct item numbers to your health fund, so that they can accurately confirm your coverage.
  • Do I have excess or co-payments to be paid on my policy for an overnight stay and how much is this?
  • If I stay longer than one night, am I required to pay additional co-payments for the extra nights?
  • If any prosthetic or disposable items are to be used in surgery, will my health fund insurance policy cover these items?

Confirmation of your health insurance coverage

The hospital is obliged to undertake a health fund check to ensure your health fund insurance company will cover the cost of your procedure/s, before you are admitted.

In order for us to undertake this check, we need to have received your admission information.

Your Excess

An excess is an upfront lump sum that you agree to pay towards your hospital stay.

On the business day prior to your procedure, we will advise you by SMS (text) at 4pm of your excess amount and/or co-payment fees. This text message will also include your admission time and fasting details. If we do not have your mobile number, we will call your landline.

Payment IN FULL of any health insurance excess or co-payment will need to be made upon admission.

(When you are admitted, you will be required to sign an 'Informed Financial Consent'. This is mandated by the government.)
