Associate Professor David van der Poorten is a Staff Specialist Gastroenterologist at Westmead Public Hospital and a Clinical Associate Professor in medicine at the University of Sydney. He is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Lakeview Private Hospital and a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) at Strathfield Private Hospital. He is currently a member of Lakeview hospital board and has previously served on the executive of the Westmead Medical staff council, Westmead Hospital Scientific Advisory Committee and the Westmead Association.
A/Prof van der Poorten has regular endoscopy lists at Lakeview Private Hospital on Mondays, Fridays and Thursdays as well as at Westmead Public. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and an active member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia.
A graduate of the University of New South Wales, A/Prof van der Poorten underwent gastroenterology training at Concord and Westmead Hospitals in Sydney, before undertaking a PhD at Westmead Hospital under Professor Jacob George. He has published widely in the medical literature and is a regular reviewer for high ranking journals in his field including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, World Journal of Gastroenterology and the Medical Journal of Australia. He previously held an international patent related to his research.
A/Prof van der Poorten’s practice encompasses all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease but he has a particular interest in colorectal cancer screening, inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s), capsule endoscopy (pill cam), reflux, gut microbiome, the management of fatty liver disease and MASH and and viral hepatitis. He is confident with advanced endoscopy techniques including Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) for large polyps, dilation of strictures within the GI tract and management of acute GI bleeding of any cause. Across all conditions, he is passionate about improving patients lives by getting the diagnosis right and using the best available treatments.
