Consultation in renal medicine, osteoporosis and bone and mineral metabolism

Dr Grahame Elder is a renal physician, whose principal interest is in bone and mineral metabolism, particularly resulting from Chronic Kidney Disease and following transplantation. He is a staff specialist in the Department of Renal Medicine Westmead Hospital, member of the Osteoporosis and Bone Biology Division at the Garvan Institute for Medical Research, Sydney and is Clinical Professor University of Notre Dame Australia and Associate Professor University of Sydney. He has been a work group member for national and international evidence-based chronic kidney disease mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) guidelines; the ‘Caring for Australasians with Renal Impairment’ (CARI) guidelines and the ‘Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes’ (KDIGO) CKD-MBD guidelines, including as chairperson of the PTH and Vitamin D workgroup at the 2013 KDIGO CKD-MBD Controversies Conference. He is Coordinator of Clinical Renal Research at Westmead Hospital, Sydney, a subject editor of the journal ‘Nephrology’ and reviewer for numerous others, co-author of ‘Osteoporosis associated with Chronic Kidney Disease’ in the current 4th edition of ‘Osteoporosis’ and author of ‘Post Transplant Metabolic Bone Disease’ in the latest edition of the ‘Oxford Textbook of Clinical Nephrology’. His publications are predominantly in the area of CKD-MBD.
