Kick-Off session for Peer Mentoring 2025 at Lakeview Rehabilitation

The Peer Mentoring Program at Lakeview Rehabilitation has continued its success following a remarkable debut in 2024. The inaugural year was met with enthusiasm and positive feedback, setting the stage for an even more impactful program in 2025. This year, the program has expanded with the addition of Paul and Jackson, further enriching the group dynamic.

The 2025 theme highlights the vital role of male nurses in rehabilitation—a topic that sparked engaging discussions during the first session. With male nurses comprising just 11% of Australia’s nursing workforce, the group explored the unique challenges they face and brainstormed solutions tailored to the rehabilitation setting.

While gender was a central focus, the group also addressed broader professional challenges. A key insight was how male nurses often navigate workplace expectations and stereotypes that can impact their career development and professional identity. These include working in a traditionally female-dominated field and confronting assumptions about their capabilities, especially in nurturing and emotional care roles.

The discussion also touched on wider issues in rehabilitation, such as high workloads, complex patient cases, and the need for effective communication within multidisciplinary teams. The group emphasised the importance of open dialogue, professional development, and fostering an inclusive environment that values every nurse’s contribution—regardless of gender.

Looking ahead, the team brainstormed future initiatives to benefit the department as a whole. Topics included promoting advocacy within the rehab setting, implementing sustainability measures for a greener workplace, and supporting staff well-being through improved work-life balance strategies.

As the Peer Mentoring Program continues to grow, Lakeview Rehab remains committed to cultivating a supportive, inclusive environment where all staff can share insights, overcome challenges, and advance their careers. This dedication ensures a bright future for both the program and the patients it serves.
