Safety in Surgery

At Lakeview Private Hospital, your safety is our top priority, especially when it comes to surgical procedures. We understand that undergoing surgery can be a significant event in your life and can cause anxiety.  We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all our patients, as well as providing reassurance and comfort.

Here’s how we prioritise your safety every step of the way:

‘Patients First’ led improvements

Part of how we put 'Patients First' is our continued commitment to improvement in all aspects of patient care. We do this through:
  • Monthly Continuous Quality Improvement meetings
  • Consumer Focus group meetings
  • Medical Advisory Committee
  • Regular updates, initiatives, and requirements from the Clinical Excellence Commission
  • Adherence to NSQHS Standards and NSW Health Department
  • Scheduled reviewing of audits and policies
  • Benchmarking of results against peers through the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS)
  • Compliant with Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) guidelines
  • Accreditation by Global-Mark (Conformity Assessment Body)

Cutting edge technology

We prioritise purchasing technology that assists us with achieving the best safety standards through safeguard features. New equipment is regularly purchased to replace any technology that is no longer considered ‘best practice’.

Our Theatres are the first in Australia to have some of the latest equipment, using not only local resources but international, to ensure we are truly ahead in patient care and optimal outcomes.

Expert Surgical Team

Our team of surgeons, anaesthetists and nurses are highly skilled professionals with extensive experience in their respective fields. They work collaboratively to ensure that every surgery is performed with precision and care.

Specialist Accreditation

All specialists undergo a stringent credentialing process which involves their qualification and training certification, peer references, AHPRA registration (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), CPD (ongoing annual required hours of training), insurance, safety checks such as police checks, WWVP (Working with Vulnerable People) and WWC (Working with Children Checks). At Lakeview Private Hospital, we have a staff member that solely manages doctors credentials, to ensure that our specialists are completely up to date with their required licensing and continued professional development.
Nurse Training

Nurse Training

Our Nurses also have a credentialing process to undergo. This includes registration by AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), ongoing required hours of training, police checks, WWVP and WWC checks.

In addition, there is a set of required annual mandatory training which includes ‘Basic Life Support, Manual Handling, Infection Control, Hand Hygiene, Fire, Patient Centred Care and Medication Safety. This training is managed by our Nurse Educators, who provide ongoing training and competencies, whilst overseeing our education calendars for the various departments.

Comprehensive Preoperative Assessment

Before surgery, at risk patients (such as older patients) undergo a thorough preoperative assessment through our Pre-Admissions Clinic. This includes a medical history review and may include diagnostic tests such as routine blood tests, ECG, chest X-rays and any other consultations that may be required.

Patients are encouraged to ask questions and voice any concerns they may have, to ensure that they are well-prepared for the procedure.
