Admission Day

Your Fasting Instructions

Your fasting instructions will have been sent to you by text message (SMS), together with your time of admission, on the business day prior to your admission. We will have called your landline if we didn’t have your mobile phone number.

What is fasting?

Fasting means you must not eat or drink anything at all, including water. Please do not chew gum or smoke. This is vital for your safety. You will be told for how long you must fast before your operation. Do not fast longer than this, as you may become very hungry and dehydrated. Brushing your teeth is fine.

If the patient is a child, please ask us for specific instructions well before admission, as fasting times vary with age and the procedure.

Your Medication

Even though you are fasting, you should continue to take your normal medication at the usual time of day, with a small sip of water.

However, there are some exceptions to this. If you are on the following medication, please don’t take this while fasting:
  • Oral hypoglycaemics (tablets for diabetes)
  • Insulin
  • Aspirin
  • Clopidigrel (Plavix, Iscover, other blood thinners)
Please check with your General Practitioner and/or Anaesthetist if you have any concerns in this regard.

Your Valuables

We highly recommend that you do not bring any valuables with you. This includes bank cards, jewellery, cash (including any payment owed to specialists) or other valuables, as the hospital cannot accept responsibility for them. If you bring a mobile phone, this needs to be switched off before your surgery. There will be a telephone available at your bedside in the ward.

Lakeview Private Hospital takes no responsibility for your mobile phone or any valuables.
Any valuables that you do bring will be at your own risk.

What to wear for surgery

  • We recommend you shower and wear comfortable, loose clothes and shoes.
  • No deodorant or perfume to be worn.
  • We ask that you remove all jewellery, makeup and nail polish before your arrival. This includes all body jewellery of any type.
  • Wedding rings can be taped if you do not wish to remove them.

Arriving on time

Arriving on time on the day is important. If you arrive too early, you will have a prolonged wait. Please bear in mind that your admission time will be earlier than your actual procedure time.

The Hospital Process

When you arrive, please go straight to the Admissions area, to the right of reception. This is where you will complete your financial paperwork and pay your account, if required.
From there, you will go to the waiting area in Theatres, to wait for your procedure.

Support Person

You may have one support person or carer to accompany you to the Theatre waiting area, if required. They will only be allowed to accompany you this far.

Operating Delays

In the event of a delay, every effort will be made to ensure that you are not inconvenienced. If possible, we will inform you of any delays before you leave home so you can delay your departure.

If you do encounter an unavoidable delay when you arrive, we will keep you updated and keep you as comfortable as possible. Please reach out to our friendly staff if you have any questions or concerns during this time.

Your surgeon is in charge of the order of surgeries.
