Programs on offer, depending on your need and availability

LSVT Big Program

As Parkinson's gradually causes movements to become smaller, slower, and weaker, this program teaches patients how to move normally again.  LSVT BIG® (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment BIG), an evidence-based rehabilitation program tailored to each patient’s movement, balance and functional goals.

Parkinson's tricks the brain's internal sensor: a small, shuffling step feels like a normal step.

To fix this, our team trains patients to make exaggerated, large-amplitude movements with maximum energy. By practicing how to "Think BIG," patients recalibrate their brain so that everyday movements—like reaching, walking, or standing up—return to a normal size.

Our half day program utilises the LSVT Big program as its primary mode of therapy, allowing patients to gain improvements in mobility, balance and range of movement.

The research supports the LSVT BIG program. A controlled trial (Ebersbach et al., 2010) documents that LSVT BIG resulted in improvements in the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale as well as other tests of motor functioning in people with Parkinson’s.

The LSVT day program at Lakeview involves 4 sessions a week for 4 weeks. Each session involves 1 hour of ‘LSVT BIG’ and 30-60 minutes of education, gait retraining and other patient specific goals. These are conducted by our team of health professionals, consisting of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, exercise physiologists, social workers and dietitians. Your care will also be overseen by a rehabilitation physician.
Please note: Our LSVT Big Program is suited to patients in stage 1-3 of Parkinsons Disease.

Parkinsons Disease Reconditioning Program

We offer a comprehensive and evidence based reconditioning program to work on your goals. Ongoing reconditioning may also be appropriate at the end of the LSVT Big program.

Your graded rehabilitation program will be tailored to meet your needs and goals. Furthermore it will be based on your availability and stage of disease.

We can work closely with any specialists or other therapists who you may have regular contact with. Where appropriate, we may discuss your progress and needs with them.

Our fully qualified and experienced team of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, exercise physiologists, social workers and dietitians may be involved in your treatment, including a rehabilitation physician who will oversee your treatment.

Please note: Our Parkinsons Disease Reconditioning Program is suited to patients in stage 1-3 of Parkinsons Disease.
