Lakeview Rehabilitation recently welcomed Dr Samiha Susmita as the first participant in its Rehabilitation Medical Observership Program, providing an opportunity for professional learning, knowledge exchange and international collaboration.
Dr Susmita completed a six-week observership from 24 August 2026 under the supervision of Dr Rummana Afreen, observing Lakeview’s rehabilitation doctors and multidisciplinary approach to patient care as part of her medical training.
Learning across healthcare systems
Rehabilitation medicine brings together medical, nursing and allied health disciplines to support patients through recovery and help them achieve greater function and independence.
During her observership, Dr Susmita had the opportunity to see this multidisciplinary model in practice and develop a broader understanding of how rehabilitation care is delivered within an Australian private hospital setting.
The placement also created an opportunity for professional exchange, bringing together different clinical experiences and perspectives across healthcare systems.
Dr Samiha Susmita
Dr Susmita is an MRCP (UK)-qualified doctor with more than four years of post-internship clinical experience in internal medicine and hospital-based practice in Bangladesh.
Her postgraduate training through the BCPS program has provided clinical exposure across intensive care, nephrology, neurology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, geriatrics, respiratory medicine and general internal medicine.
This broad clinical background provided a valuable foundation for her six-week period observing rehabilitation medicine at Lakeview.
Rehabilitation in practice
Throughout the observership, Dr Susmita observed Lakeview’s rehabilitation doctors and the broader multidisciplinary team as they supported patients through different stages of rehabilitation.
Her placement provided exposure to rehabilitation assessment, individual goal setting, functional recovery and discharge planning, as well as the collaboration between medical, nursing and allied health disciplines that supports coordinated patient care.
She also gained insight into Lakeview’s patient-centred approach to rehabilitation, where treatment and recovery goals are considered in the context of each patient’s individual needs and circumstances.
Creating connections through shared knowledge
While healthcare systems differ across countries, professional observation and knowledge exchange can provide valuable opportunities for learning.
For Dr Susmita, the six-week placement provided exposure to rehabilitation medicine within an Australian private hospital environment. For Lakeview’s team, it provided an opportunity to share clinical knowledge and gain insight from a medical professional with experience in another healthcare system.
These professional exchanges support discussion, broaden perspectives and contribute to continued learning in rehabilitation practice.
Supporting continued learning at Lakeview
Dr Susmita’s completed six-week observership marked an important first for Lakeview Rehabilitation.
The experience reflects Lakeview’s commitment to professional development, multidisciplinary collaboration and opportunities for shared clinical learning.
We thank Dr Susmita for spending her six-week observership with our Rehabilitation team and wish her every success as she continues her medical training.
