Supporting the wellbeing of our staff is an important part of creating a safe, respectful and supportive healthcare environment.
Lakeview Rehabilitation recently hosted a Mental Health Study Day in partnership with the Black Dog Institute and Mindworx Psychology, giving staff dedicated time to learn, reflect and strengthen their understanding of workplace mental health and psychological wellbeing.
Building practical skills for the workplace
The interactive workshop explored a range of topics related to psychological health and safety, including psychosocial hazards, recognising changes in behaviour, supportive workplace conversations and the Five Ways to Wellbeing.
A key focus of the day was turning this knowledge into practical skills that staff can use in their everyday interactions.
Through group discussions, activities and role-play scenarios, participants explored how to recognise when a colleague may be experiencing difficulties, how to approach a conversation respectfully and how we can contribute to a supportive workplace culture.
Building confidence through conversation
Knowing when and how to start a conversation about mental health is not always easy.
The study day gave staff the opportunity to practise these conversations in a supportive learning environment, working through realistic scenarios and considering different ways to respond when someone may need support.
Staff responded positively to the interactive format, particularly the practical examples and role-play activities. The workshop also demonstrated an increase in participants’ self-rated knowledge and confidence across key areas of workplace mental health and psychological safety.
Supporting the people who care for our patients
Healthcare can be a demanding environment, making it particularly important to create opportunities for staff to pause, learn and reflect on their own wellbeing.
The Mental Health Study Day encouraged staff to consider not only how they can support their colleagues, but also the practical steps they can take to look after their own psychological wellbeing.
At Lakeview Rehabilitation, we recognise that a healthy and supportive workplace benefits our staff and the patients in our care. Continuing to invest in education, professional development and open conversations around wellbeing is part of our broader commitment to Patient First.
Thank you to the Black Dog Institute, Mindworx Psychology and all Lakeview staff who participated in the Mental Health Study Day and contributed so openly to the discussions and activities throughout the workshop.
