Cornea, Cataract and Anterior Segment

Dr Saadiah Goolam is an ophthalmic surgeon with expertise in cornea, external disease, anterior segment, and complex cataract management. She brings a wealth of experience in cornea and cataracts, with close to a decade of dedicated practice. She provides a tailored approach to patient care, with evidence-based management and in line with best practice patterns.

Dr Goolam is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. She studied Medicine at the University of New South Wales where she undertook degrees in Science (Anatomy/Physiology), Medicine and Surgery.

After relocating to South Africa, Saadiah completed her specialist training with the College of Ophthalmologists of South Africa. She was awarded a Master of Medicine in Ophthalmology from the University of the Witwatersrand for her research in Retinoblastoma in the South African Population.

Dr Goolam has been presented with the following awards:

  • The Neville Welsh medal by the College of Medicines South Africa for distinguished results in Part I of the fellowship examination.
  • The Elie Dahan Ophthalmic Surgery Prize for top resident of the year.
  • The Registrar Prize for best poster presentation by invited international peer review at the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa Congress
  • The International Travel Grant to present her research at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) congress in Denver, Colorado.

Saadiah returned to Australia to undertake a corneal fellowship at Sydney Eye Hospital and a Cornea and Anterior Segment fellowship at Westmead Hospital. She also undertook specific training in lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty techniques with Apollo Hospitals and The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant and Research. Dr Goolam is a reviewer for the World Ophthalmology Congress abstract submissions in cornea, cataract, and external disease; and has been invited as a panellist and speaker at international cornea meetings.

With a keen interest in cornea and external disease research, Saadiah is a research affiliate with the Save Sight Institute for the University of Sydney and has served as an investigator for several clinical trials involving novel therapeutics for dry eye disease, adenoviral conjunctivitis, and Fuchs Endothelial Dystrophy. Through her affiliation with the Discipline of Ophthalmology, Save Sight Institute, she serves as instructor and examiner for the Practical Ophthalmic Science Programme for the University of Sydney and is a lecturer and demonstrator for the RANZCO trainee Microsurgical Skills Course.
