Prof Ahlenstiel is a clinical Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist with significant leadership roles throughout Western Sydney such as Director for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy in WSLHD, as well as Head of Department for Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Blacktown-Mount Druitt Hospital.
Prof Ahlenstial graduated and received his doctorate from the University of Bonn, Germany and subsequently undertook a Liver Fellowship at world renowned National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington, DC in the United States. Since coming to Australia he has completed basic and advanced training in Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2013 and has worked as a staff specialist at Westmead Hospital since 2014. Prof Ahlenstial currently leads the Liver Immunology group at Storr Liver Centre at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research. As the incoming Chair of Medicine at Blacktown Hospital, Prof Ahlenstial pursues an active interest in research and education with more than 60 publications with more than 2500 citations. He is regular reviewer for international medical and scientific journals.
Prof Ahlenstial is a VMO Gastroenterologist at Lakeview Private Hospital and has regular endoscopy lists there and at Blacktown/Mt Druitt hospitals. He is a strong believer in high quality, accessible medical services.
His practice encompasses all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease but has a particular interest in colorectal cancer screening, pillcam, the management of chronic liver disease including viral hepatitis B and C and liver cancer. He is accreditated in colonoscopy and gastroscopy and capsule endoscopy by the Conjoint Committee for the Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) and a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA).
